Vitamin B9 hides under several names on labels: folates, folic acid, methylfolate. These are not exactly synonyms. Understanding the nuance helps you read a box and grasp why certain forms are highlighted.

One name, several forms
Folate is the generic name for vitamin B9. It is found naturally in foods, particularly leafy vegetables, hence its name, derived from the Latin folium, the leaf. In supplements and fortified products, it appears in several forms.
